This year we’ve been working closely with Luminate Education Group in Leeds to develop a proposals for new PassiveHouse student facilities within the grounds of the historic Temple Newsam House, Farm and Gardens in Leeds. Already serving as a campus for Leeds College’s School of Animal Care and Land Management, this exciting new building is located adjacent to the Grade II listed Walled Garden.
The scheme will provide much needed additional classrooms alongside practical demonstration areas, staff and welfare facilities. The single story building occupies a tight linear site to the rear of the listed walled garden, conceived as a series of ancillary buildings in the landscape. The restrained form has been developed to respect the skyline silhouette of the historic north wall and to minimise the impact on views from the south across the historic parkland. The building is set back from the north wall to retain understanding and engagement with the significant infrastructure of the heated wall. Root protection zones, access and archaeology added layers of complexity that have been overcome within the design.
A simple palette of materials including timber and vertical metal cladding, accentuate the strong linear form and covered walkway which combine to create a contemporary intervention that is complimentary to its setting. The scheme has been designed to PassiveHouse standards to provide a high level of occupant comfort using very little energy for heating and cooling. Not only will this provide an efficient and sustainable building for the College into the future, but will also allow students to engage with and better understand how the buildings they occupy can be better designed for the environment.
Planning and Listed building Consent are awaited, with siteworks due to start Spring 2025.
